General Information
Profile of the expert
Wisdom Changadeya is Professor of Biology at University of Malawi. He earned a PhD in Population Genetics in 20009 at the same university. He has published over 50 research articles in peer reviewed reputable international and local journals. The research articles are in various disciplines including Genetics, Limnology, Virology etc.

Professor Changadeya has been involved in biotechnology issues in Malawi since 2002 and has participated in many training workshops as a trainer and trainee. He is actively involved in raising awareness in biotechnology among politicians, government technocrats, farmers, NGO etc through workshops and production of a monthly Biotechnology Update Newsletter. He has produced the monthly newsletter since 2004 with a circulation of more than 500 readers monthly. He has been involved in biotechnology regulatory issues in Malawi for a long time through participation in formulation and production of various biosafety regulatory instruments currently housed at the Environmental Affairs Department (EAD) such as the National Biotechnology and Biosafety Policy of 2008, Biosafety (Management of Genetically Modified Organisms) Regulations of 2007, Standard Operating Procedures: Trial Managers Handbook, Inspectors Handbook and Guidelines for Confined Field Trials, Guidelines for determining the regulatory process of Genome Edited plants and their products in Malawi, Guidelines for safety assessment for food and feed derived from genetically modified crops and Guidelines for safety assessment and risk management of genetically modified organisms with stacked gene events. When Bt cotton was first tried at LUANAR, he became the first Malawian technical expert confined field trial dossier reviewer for the National Biosafety Regulatory Committee (NBRC). He has since provided scientific technical review for confined trials of Bt cowpea and GM maize. Recently, he also participated in the review of the Biosafety act of 2002.
